Remembering A deputy
GAYLORD — Sheriff Jim McBride said the Gaylord Michigan State Police (MSP) post is investigating the death of former Otsego County Sheriff’s Dept. (OCSD) deputy Phil Vandyke, 43, who the sheriff said died in Gaylord Monday night.
According to McBride, the 16-year veteran of the department resigned in 2005 to accept a full-time position with a private company out of Texas which did security training in Iraq.
He said the former deputy had taken a one-year leave of absence to work with the Texas company training Iraqi police.
“He decided he liked doing that and decided to do it full time,” McBride said. “Our deputies responded to the call Monday night but because of who it was, the investigation was turned over to the state police.”
Det. Ron Nightingale from the Cheboygan MSP post said he was called in Monday night to investigate the death, “to show neutrality. Anytime you have one of your own, even though in this case it had been a few years since he was with the department, it’s best to call in a second party to investigate.”
Nightingale said he would be waiting for toxicology results before closing the investigation.
“There is nothing to support foul play,” he said of Vandyke’s death.
** I knew Deputy Vandyke for over 15 yrs I personally rode with him and assisted with some traffic stops, I thought him to be a good man of good charcter, My thoughts and My prayers go out to him...

Yeah well, he killed himself becuase he was introuble for touching a 15 year old inapropriatly and talking about sex to me online. I knew him my whole life.
This guy was no hero, only reason he killed himself was because he knew he was guilty of criminal sexual conduct (csc) involving underage girls and that he would go to prison,
